Long-tail keywords are longer, more specific search phrases, such as "emergency plumber open sunday kothrud", that each get few searches but show clear intent.

A long-tail keyword is a specific, usually longer search phrase with relatively few searches. "Shoes" is a head term; "waterproof trail running shoes for wide feet" is long tail. The name comes from the shape of a chart of keywords by volume: a few huge terms, then a very long tail of small ones.

Why long-tail keywords matter

  • Clear intent: the searcher has told you exactly what they want.
  • Less competition: fewer pages target the exact phrase.
  • Volume adds up: many small searches together can outnumber one big one.
  • Conversational and AI searches are naturally long: people ask full questions.

How to find them free

  1. Search Console's Performance report: the queries you already appear for, many of them long tail.
  2. Google's autocomplete, People also ask and related searches.
  3. The questions customers send you by email, phone and chat.
  4. Forums and communities in your field.
  5. Keyword tools' question and related-keyword reports. See keyword research.

How to use them

Don't make a separate page for every variation; that drifts into doorway pages. Group long-tail phrases with the same intent and answer them on one page, using the phrases as section headings where they fit. Make a new page when the intent is genuinely different.

Yes. They're usually the most realistic searches for a new site to rank for, and they bring visitors with clear intent.
