Google’s 15 October AI Mode Update: Official Pages, Preferred Sources and Search Profiles
Google announced five changes to AI Mode and AI Overviews on 15 October. Here is what each one is, its status (launching, testing or rolling out), and what a site owner can and can't do about it.

Key takeaways
- Google is launching updates that show inline links higher up in AI responses more often.
- It is testing a section that surfaces the one or two official places to complete a task, with context about why each link is useful. It has not published how it picks them.
- It is rolling out prominent carousels of timely articles in AI features, and they highlight the reader's Preferred Sources. Preferred Sources use has grown more than 7x since the start of the year, Google says.
- It started testing clickable creator and publisher names on video results that lead to Search profiles.
- None of these come with new markup or settings to apply. Being indexed and eligible for a snippet still comes first.
On 15 October 2026 Google announced changes to how AI Mode and AI Overviews link to the web (Google). Some are launching, some are tests. This page lists each one with its status, quotes Google where it matters, and separates what Google said from what we suggest.
The changes at a glance
| Change | Status | What it means for a site |
|---|---|---|
| Inline links shown higher up in responses, more often | Launching | Links inside the answer text sit nearer the top |
| A section for the one or two official places to complete a task | Testing | Some answers lead with official links and say why each is useful |
| Prominent carousels of timely articles in AI features | Rolling out to more locations and languages | News-style coverage gets a visual slot; Preferred Sources are highlighted |
| Clickable creator and publisher names on video results | Testing | Names lead to Search profiles |
| More prominent related-article links at the end of some answers | No status given | Links get thumbnails and more space |
Inline links, placed higher
Inline links are links embedded in words or phrases of an AI response. Google says it has made continued and substantial increases to them, and is now launching updates to show them higher up in responses more frequently. A page still has to be indexed and eligible for a snippet before it can be one of those links.
A section for official pages (testing)
Sometimes, there are only one or two official places on the web to complete a specific task or get the exact info you need.
For those cases Google is testing a display that puts those links in a dedicated section at the top of the response, with context about why each one is useful. Google did not publish selection criteria, so treat any checklist that promises a spot here with suspicion.
Article carousels and Preferred Sources
Google is starting to roll out prominent carousels for timely articles in AI Search features, and these carousels highlight a reader's Preferred Sources. Google says the number of people using Preferred Sources has grown by more than 7x since the start of the year. For a publisher, that makes asking loyal readers to add you as a Preferred Source a concrete step; for most business sites, the carousels matter only if you publish timely articles.
Creator names and Search profiles (testing)
Google started testing clickable creator and publisher names on video results that link to their Search profiles, which it says give people a quick way to learn about creators and their broader work. Eligible creators and publishers can follow Google's own getting-started guide, linked from its post.
What didn't change
- No new markup or file is required by these changes.
- Eligibility still starts with being indexed and eligible for a snippet; see why a page isn't in AI Overviews.
- Google's announcement doesn't mention Search Console, so there is no new reporting to look for yet.

FAQ
How does Google choose the official pages it shows in AI Mode?+
Google hasn't said. Its 15 October post describes the section as for times when there are only one or two official places on the web to complete a task or get exact information, and says it is a test. Anything beyond that is guesswork. What you control is making it unambiguous which site is officially yours: Organization structured data, one consistent site name, and links to your real profiles.
What are Preferred Sources?+
Google's post describes Preferred Sources as a way to find coverage from the websites you value. It says use has grown more than 7x since the start of 2026, and that the new article carousels in AI features highlight a person's Preferred Sources.
Do I need new structured data for these changes?+
Google's post doesn't name any. The changes are to how AI Mode and AI Overviews display links, not new markup requirements.
Is the official-pages section live for everyone?+
No. Google describes it as a test. The higher-placed inline links are launching; the article carousels are rolling out; the creator names on video results are in testing.
