How to Track Keyword Rankings (Free With Search Console, or With a Rank Tracker)

Search Console tells you where your pages actually appeared, for free. A rank tracker tells you where they'd appear for chosen keywords and places, every day. Most sites need the first; some need both.

Key takeaways

  • Google Search Console's Performance report is the free, first-party record of where your pages appeared, by query, page, country and device.
  • Average position is the average of your topmost result's position across the searches where you appeared, so it moves when impressions change, not only when rankings do.
  • Rankings vary by location, language, device and person, so a manual search or one tracker reading is a sample, not the truth.
  • Use a rank tracker when you need daily positions for chosen keywords in specific cities or countries, or reports for clients.
  • Track rankings alongside clicks and conversions. A better position that brings no clicks isn't progress.

To track keyword rankings for free, use Google Search Console: its Performance report shows the average position of your pages for every search they appeared in, by page, country and device. For daily positions on specific keywords in specific places, add a rank tracker.

Method 1: Google Search Console (free)

  1. Open Search Console, then Performance, then Search results.
  2. Turn on all four metrics: Total clicks, Total impressions, Average CTR and Average position.
  3. Open the Queries tab to see positions by search, or Pages to see them by page.
  4. Filter by country and device, since rankings differ between them.
  5. Compare date ranges, for example the last 28 days against the previous period, to see movement.

Average position is the average position of your topmost result for the searches where you appeared. It's averaged across real searches, so it can change when your impressions change, for example when you start appearing for new, lower-ranked queries, even if no existing ranking moved.

Method 2: a rank tracker

A rank tracker checks chosen keywords on a schedule, for chosen locations and devices, and records your position and competitors'. It's useful for local businesses tracking city-level results, for agencies reporting to clients, and for monitoring a small set of high-value keywords daily. Options and prices are compared in the best rank trackers.

Why rankings differ between tools and people

Google ranks results in context: the searcher's location, language and device all affect what appears, and Google's results pages mix in ads, AI Overviews, local packs and other features. That's why your own search, a colleague's, a rank tracker and Search Console can all show different numbers. None is wrong; each is a different sample.

What to track

  • Your 20 to 50 most valuable searches: the ones close to a sale or enquiry.
  • The pages behind them, so you can see which page ranks for what.
  • Clicks and click-through rate alongside position.
  • Conversions from organic search in your analytics.
  • Whether you're cited in AI answers for the same questions; see how to measure AI visibility.

Keyword ranking analysis: reading the data

PatternWhat it usually means
High impressions, position 5 to 20, low CTRClose to page one: improve the page and its title
Good position, low CTRThe title or snippet doesn't match what searchers want, or SERP features push you down
Position dropped for many queries at onceA technical change or a Google update; check indexing first
Two of your pages swap for one queryThey compete for the same intent; merge or differentiate them

FAQ

How do I check my website's ranking on Google for free?+

Use Google Search Console. In the Performance report, turn on Average position and look at the Queries and Pages tabs. It shows where your pages appeared for each search, for free.

Why does my ranking look different when I search myself?+

Results depend on location, language, device and sometimes search history. Your own search reflects only your situation; Search Console averages across real searchers.

What does average position mean in Search Console?+

The average position of the topmost result from your site for the queries and dates you've selected. A lower number is better; position 1 is the top.

Do I need a paid rank tracker?+

Not to start. A rank tracker helps when you need daily tracking of specific keywords in specific locations, competitor comparisons or white-label reports for clients.
