Backlink analysis: how to check your links and your competitors'
Backlink analysis means reviewing which sites link to a website, how good those links are, and how they compare with competitors' links.

Backlink analysis is reviewing who links to a site and whether those links are relevant and earned. You do it for two reasons: to understand your own link profile, and to find link opportunities by looking at what competitors have earned.
Where backlink data comes from
| Source | Covers | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console, Links report | Your site only: top linking sites, top linked pages, anchor text | Free |
| Bing Webmaster Tools | Your site's backlinks, with a comparison against other domains | Free |
| Ahrefs, Semrush, Majestic, Moz | Any site, from each vendor's own crawler | Paid, with limited free versions |
No index is complete. Each tool finds different links and calculates its own metrics (Domain Rating, Authority Score, Trust Flow, Domain Authority). Those metrics are the vendor's estimates, not Google's. See backlink checkers compared.
How to analyze backlinks
- Export your linking domains from Search Console and one third-party tool.
- Group them: industry sites, local sites, directories, news, partners, spam.
- Note which of your pages earn links and why: usually data, tools or guides.
- Run the same report for two or three competitors that outrank you.
- List domains that link to several competitors but not to you. Those are your outreach targets.
- Look for links to broken pages on your site and redirect them to the right page.
Competitor backlink analysis
Look for patterns, not just lists. If every competitor has links from the same industry association, join it. If their most-linked page is a free calculator, consider building a better one. Copying their links one by one rarely works; copying the reason they earned them does.
FAQ
What is the best free backlink checker?+
Google Search Console's Links report for your own site. For other sites, the free versions of tools such as Ahrefs, Semrush and Majestic show a limited number of links.
Why do backlink tools show different numbers?+
Each vendor runs its own crawler and keeps its own index, so each finds a different subset of the web's links.
What is backlink watch?+
Usually a free backlink lookup site or a monitoring feature that alerts you to new and lost links. Check what index it uses before relying on its data.
