Google ranking means where a page appears in Google's results for a particular search. There's no single score: Google says its automated ranking systems look at many factors, including the meaning of the query, the relevance and quality of pages, their usability, and the searcher's context, such as location and language.

Why rankings differ between people

The same search can show different results by country, city, language, device and, for some queries, search history. That's why your own search, a colleague's and a rank tracker can disagree. Search Console's average position is the most reliable view of how your pages actually appeared.

How to check your website's Google ranking

  1. Search Console: Performance report, with Position turned on, by query and page.
  2. A rank tracker for chosen keywords over time; see rank trackers compared.
  3. A private browser window for a quick manual look.

Improving it

The practical steps are in how to improve your Google ranking. The short version: fix crawling and indexing, match the intent of the search, make each page the most complete answer, and earn links. Nobody can pay Google for a higher organic position.

FAQ

How can I see my site's rank on Google?+

Use Search Console's Performance report for average position by query, or a rank tracker for specific keywords and locations.

Is there a Google ranking score for websites?+

No. Google doesn't publish one. Third-party tools offer their own authority scores, which Google doesn't use.
