The title tag is the HTML <title> element that names a page. Google usually uses it as the clickable headline in search results.

The title tag is the <title> element in a page's HTML head. It's the name of the page for browsers, and Google usually uses it as the blue clickable headline in search results, which Google calls the title link.
What Google recommends
- Every page should have a title.
- Write descriptive, concise titles. Avoid vague ones such as "Home" or "Profile".
- Avoid keyword stuffing and repeated boilerplate across many pages.
- Make each title unique to its page.
- Brand your titles concisely, for example with your site name at the end.
Google doesn't publish a character limit, but titles that are too long get cut off in results. Putting the most important words first keeps them visible.
Why Google sometimes shows a different title
Google may build the title link from other parts of the page, such as the main heading or link text, when the title tag is missing, too long, stuffed with keywords, or doesn't describe the page. The fix is a title that accurately and concisely describes the content.

How long should a title tag be?+
Long enough to describe the page, short enough not to be cut off. Google doesn't set a limit, but around 50 to 60 characters usually displays in full on desktop.
Is the title tag the same as the H1?+
No. The title tag sits in the HTML head and appears in search results and browser tabs; the H1 is the visible main heading on the page. They often say similar things.
Should I put my brand in every title?+
Google suggests concise branding, such as the site name at the end of the title, rather than long boilerplate on every page.
