Voice search SEO: how to get answers read out by assistants

Voice search optimization means making your content easy for voice assistants such as Google Assistant, Siri and Alexa to find and read aloud as an answer.

Voice search SEO is about being the answer a voice assistant reads out, or the business it recommends, when someone asks a question out loud. It has a lot in common with answer engine optimization: voice assistants usually give one answer, not ten results.

How voice assistants find answers

  • For general questions, assistants draw on web search results, often the same sources that win featured snippets.
  • For local requests ("plumber near me"), they rely on map and business listings such as Google Business Profile and Apple Business Connect.
  • Increasingly, AI assistants generate spoken answers from retrieved web pages.

What actually helps

  1. Answer common questions directly, in one or two plain sentences, right under a heading that asks the question.
  2. Write the way people speak: full questions and natural phrases.
  3. Keep your business listings complete and accurate: hours, address, phone, categories.
  4. Make pages fast, indexable and readable without JavaScript.
  5. Use structured data that describes your business, products and FAQs accurately.

There's no special voice markup for most sites. Google's speakable markup exists but is limited to news publishers in a beta and to specific regions and languages.

FAQ

Is voice search SEO different from normal SEO?+

Mostly not. It's normal SEO with extra emphasis on direct, spoken-style answers and complete local listings.

Do I need speakable schema?+

Probably not. Google's speakable markup is a beta for news content in limited regions; most sites can ignore it.
