Reddit and AI Search: Does Reddit Get Your Business Mentioned by ChatGPT and Google?

“Post on Reddit to get into ChatGPT” is the most repeated piece of AI-visibility advice of the past two years. Some of it is true. The version most people sell is how businesses get banned.

Key takeaways

  • Reddit has data agreements with Google (announced February 2024) and OpenAI (May 2024), and its threads appear often in AI answers about products and services.
  • Reddit’s share of ChatGPT citations isn’t stable: one dataset showed it falling from 3.83% to 0.52% in August 2026, cause unknown.
  • Reddit and its moderators remove promotion aggressively; Reddit says its own AI catches about 25,000 spammy posts a day.
  • What works is slow and honest: answer questions in your field, disclose who you are, and respond when people discuss you.
  • Never seed fake recommendations. It breaks Reddit’s rules and, for reviews and testimonials, US consumer law.

Reddit can help your business get mentioned by AI assistants, because ChatGPT, Google’s AI features and Perplexity read and cite Reddit threads for many “what should I buy” and “who should I hire” questions. But only genuine discussion helps. Promotional posts are removed quickly, accounts that only promote get banned, and Reddit’s share of AI citations has swung enough in 2026 that no business should depend on it. The workable approach is to answer questions in your field as yourself, disclose your connection, and pay attention to threads that already discuss you.

Why AI answers quote Reddit

For questions about products, services and experiences, Reddit threads hold what assistants find hard to get elsewhere: first-hand opinions, comparisons and complaints in ordinary language. Two data agreements made that content easier to use. In February 2024 Google announced an expanded partnership with Reddit, giving it access to Reddit’s data; Google said the deal doesn’t change its use of publicly available, crawlable content in its products. In May 2024 OpenAI and Reddit announced a partnership that gives OpenAI access to Reddit’s Data API to bring Reddit content into ChatGPT.

But the share keeps moving

Promptwatch data reported by Relevant Audience showed Reddit’s share of ChatGPT search citations falling from an average of 3.83% (18 July to 7 August 2026) to 0.52% (14 to 17 August). Neither OpenAI nor Reddit has explained it, and the data is one vendor’s, but it makes the point: a channel you don’t control can stop paying overnight. Ahrefs’ 1.4-million-prompt study also found that 88% of the URLs ChatGPT cited came from its general search results rather than from dedicated news, Reddit or YouTube channels (vendor study). Reddit matters where Reddit threads rank for the question; it isn’t a side door.

Reddit is policing promotion harder than ever

In July 2026 Reddit said its own AI was catching about 25,000 spammy posts a day, as marketers targeted it for AI visibility (The Next Web). On top of that, every subreddit has its own rules and volunteer moderators who know their regulars. A new account that appears in ten threads recommending the same product is the pattern both systems look for. Bans are per community, and in practice rarely reversed.

What works for a business on Reddit

  1. Listen first. Search Reddit for your business name, your competitors and your category. You’ll learn what people praise and complain about, which is worth more than any post you write.
  2. Answer questions in your field, as yourself. A plumber explaining why a boiler keeps losing pressure, an accountant explaining a tax rule: useful answers with no link earn trust, and a username that matches your business does the rest.
  3. Disclose, every time. If you mention your business, say it’s yours. Communities forgive promotion far more readily than they forgive hiding it.
  4. Read the rules of each subreddit before posting. Many ban self-promotion entirely; some allow it in a weekly thread.
  5. Respond when you’re discussed. If someone asks about your business or complains, a calm, honest reply from you is often what later readers (and assistants) quote.
  6. Pay for promotion through Reddit’s ads, which are labelled as such.

What not to do

  • Don’t pose as a customer, or pay anyone to. Fake testimonials break Reddit’s rules, and in the US the FTC’s 2024 rule bans fake reviews and testimonials, including ones that misrepresent who wrote them.
  • Don’t buy aged accounts or upvotes. They’re a known spam signal and break Reddit’s rules.
  • Don’t paste AI-written answers. Moderators recognise them, and they’re precisely what Reddit’s spam systems were built for.
  • Don’t argue with critics. Fix the problem, say so, and move on.

Google’s own guide makes the general point: “seeking inauthentic ‘mentions’ across the web isn’t as helpful as it might seem”.

Where else the same effort goes further

Reddit is one source among several. In Ahrefs’ 75,000-brand study, branded web mentions in general and YouTube mentions correlated with ChatGPT visibility at 0.664 and about 0.737, well ahead of backlinks. For most businesses, the same hours spent on getting onto cited “best of” lists, collecting genuine reviews or making a few honest YouTube demos will reach more of the pages assistants read. FAQ

Does posting on Reddit help my business show up in ChatGPT?+

Genuine, useful discussion that mentions you can, because assistants read and cite Reddit threads for many product and service questions. Promotional posts usually get removed before anything reads them, and accounts that only promote get banned. Reddit’s share of ChatGPT citations has also swung sharply, so don’t build a strategy on one channel.

Why does Google show so many Reddit results?+

People add “reddit” to searches to find first-hand opinions, and Google has said it wants to surface more forum and discussion content. In February 2024 Google and Reddit announced a partnership that gives Google access to Reddit’s data; Google said it doesn’t change how it uses publicly crawlable content in Search.

Can I promote my business on Reddit?+

Within each community’s rules. Many subreddits ban self-promotion outright or allow it only in specific threads. The safe approach is to take part as yourself, disclose your connection whenever you mention your business, and use Reddit’s paid ads for promotion.

Should I hire someone to post about my business on Reddit?+

Not to pose as customers. Undisclosed posts that pretend to be independent recommendations break Reddit’s rules, can break consumer-protection rules on fake testimonials, and tend to be caught: moderators and Reddit’s own systems look for exactly that pattern.
