Social signals and SEO: does social media affect rankings?
Social signals are engagement on social media, such as likes, shares and comments. Google hasn't documented them as a ranking signal, but social activity can help SEO indirectly.

Social signals are the likes, shares, comments and follows your content gets on social platforms. A long-running SEO question is whether Google counts them. Google's documentation of its ranking systems doesn't list social media engagement as a signal, and Google's SEO Starter Guide treats social media as a way to promote your site, not a ranking factor.
How social media helps SEO indirectly
- People who see your content may link to it from their sites.
- It can lead to more searches for your brand.
- Social profiles themselves often rank for your brand name, and AI assistants often cite well-known platforms.
- Discussion on Reddit, forums and LinkedIn can surface in search results and AI answers.
SEO vs SMO
SMO (social media optimization) means optimizing your presence on social platforms: profiles, posting, engagement and content suited to each network. SEO optimizes your website for search engines. They work together: social spreads content, search captures demand.
