How Wix serves pages to crawlers

Wix serves server-rendered pages, so search engines get the page content in the HTML. Some interactive elements still load with JavaScript; check that your main text is visible without it.

Wix's guided SEO setup (formerly called SEO Wiz) walks you through connecting Google Search Console, choosing your main keywords and setting the homepage title and description. It's a good starting point, not the whole job.

Page-by-page checklist

  1. In each page's SEO settings, write a unique title tag and meta description.
  2. Set a short, readable URL slug for each page.
  3. Use one H1 per page (Wix's heading styles map to HTML heading levels) and headings for sections.
  4. Add alt text to images in the image settings.
  5. Link pages to each other from the text, not only from the menu.
  6. Set up 301 redirects in the URL redirect manager when you change a URL.

Technical settings

  • Wix generates an XML sitemap automatically; submit it in Search Console.
  • Wix's robots.txt editor lets you add rules if you need to; most sites don't.
  • Use a custom domain, not a wixsite.com address.
  • Keep the number of heavy apps, animations and large images down for speed.
  • Check robots.txt allows the AI search crawlers you want: OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search), Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot. See the AI crawler list and the robots.txt generator.
  • Check your host's or CDN's bot protection doesn't block them even when robots.txt allows them.
  • Make sure the main text is in the HTML the server sends. AI crawlers don't run JavaScript.
  • Avoid nosnippet and tiny max-snippet values on pages you want quoted; they also keep pages out of Google's AI Overviews.
