llms.txt generator, with the truth about what it does

Enter your site and we draft an llms.txt from your sitemap: your name, a one-line summary, and your pages grouped into sections of links, as the llms.txt proposal describes. Be clear about what it's for. It's useful for documentation that coding agents and developer tools read. It isn't a ranking factor for Google or AI search: Google says Google Search ignores llms.txt files, and Ahrefs' analysis of server logs from 137,000 sites found 97% of the files received zero requests in a month. What it checks

Spec format
An H1 name, a blockquote summary, H2 sections of markdown link lists, and an Optional section for pages an agent can skip, per llmstxt.org.
Built from your sitemap
Reads sitemap.xml (or your homepage links if there isn't one), up to 200 URLs, and fetches titles and descriptions for up to 40 pages.
Your existing file
Shows what your /llms.txt returns today, so you can compare before replacing it.
What it won't do
It won't change how Google or AI search engines rank or cite you. Crawler access and real content in HTML matter there; the free audit checks those.

Questions

Does llms.txt work?+

Not for AI visibility. Google says Google Search ignores llms.txt files, and Ahrefs' analysis of server logs from 137,000 sites found 97% of the files received zero requests in a month. It can still be useful as documentation for developer tools and coding agents.

Do AI crawlers read llms.txt?+

Rarely. Ahrefs' server logs from 137,000 domains showed 97% of llms.txt files received zero requests in May 2026, and no AI bot requested an llms.txt file that didn't exist. Google says Search doesn't use them. Keeping one is harmless; it doesn't change how your pages are crawled.

Does Google use llms.txt?+

No. Google's guide says: “You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, markup, or Markdown to appear in Google Search”, and such files will “neither harm nor help” because “Google Search ignores them.”

Does llms.txt get you cited by ChatGPT or Perplexity?+

There's no evidence it does. None of OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity or Google says it uses llms.txt to choose sources (checked October 2026), and a 300,000-domain correlation study (SE Ranking) found no measurable link with citations.

Who should publish one?+

Sites with developer documentation that coding agents read. For everyone else, do nothing: Google's Lighthouse llms.txt audit marks a missing file “Not Applicable”, and the file is harmless but unnecessary.
