The best SEO course is free and written by Google. Start there, practise on a real site, read one good book, and follow a few news sources that report what search engines actually announce.

Key takeaways

  • Start with the primary sources: Google's SEO Starter Guide and Search Central documentation, and Bing's Webmaster Guidelines. They're free and they're what the search engines say.
  • Practise on a real site, even a small one: set up Search Console, publish pages and watch what happens.
  • The Art of SEO (4th edition, O'Reilly, 2023) by Eric Enge, Stephan Spencer and Jessie Stricchiola is a long-standing reference.
  • Structured courses exist on Coursera (such as UC Davis's SEO Specialization) and Udemy; check how recently a course was updated.
  • For news, follow the Google Search Central blog and outlets that report announcements, such as Search Engine Land and Search Engine Roundtable.

The fastest way to learn SEO is to read what the search engines themselves publish, then practise on a real website and watch the results in Search Console. Books and courses help you organize it; news sources keep you current.

1. Start with the official documentation

ResourceWhat it covers
Google's SEO Starter GuideThe fundamentals, plus the myths Google says to ignore
Google Search Central documentationCrawling, indexing, structured data, JavaScript, international sites, spam policies
Google Search Central blogAnnouncements of updates and new features
Search Console HelpEvery report, explained
Bing Webmaster GuidelinesWhat Bing looks for and penalizes

These are free and authoritative. When a course or article disagrees with them, the documentation wins. Our SEO glossary explains the terms with links back to these sources.

2. Practise on a real site

  1. Use your own business site, a hobby blog or a small new site.
  2. Set up Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
  3. Publish a handful of pages that answer specific questions.
  4. Audit them: the free SEO checker shows technical problems and how to fix them.
  5. Watch impressions, clicks and position change over a few weeks, and note what you changed.

Our SEO for beginners 90-day plan turns this into weekly steps.

3. A book

The Art of SEO by Eric Enge, Stephan Spencer and Jessie Stricchiola is a long-running reference. Its fourth edition was published by O'Reilly in September 2023 and covers generative AI alongside classic SEO. It's several hundred pages long, so it works best as a reference you dip into by topic.

4. Courses

  • Coursera: the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Specialization from UC Davis, a self-paced series covering on-page and off-page SEO, local and international SEO and site audits, with a certificate.
  • Udemy: many SEO courses at low prices. Check when each was last updated and whether it matches Google's documentation.
  • Vendor academies: several SEO tool companies run free courses. They're useful, but naturally centred on their own tools.

5. Stay current: SEO news

FAQ

Can I learn SEO for free?+

Yes. Google's SEO Starter Guide and Search Central documentation, Bing's Webmaster Guidelines, Search Console and a small site to practise on are enough to learn the fundamentals.

How long does it take to learn SEO?+

The basics take a few weeks of study and practice. Getting good takes months of working on real sites, because you learn most from watching how changes affect results.

Is The Art of SEO still worth reading?+

The fourth edition was published by O'Reilly in September 2023 and covers generative AI as well as classic SEO. It's long, so many people use it as a reference rather than reading it cover to cover.

Are Udemy SEO courses any good?+

Quality varies widely. Check the last-updated date, the instructor's real work, and whether the course contradicts Google's own documentation, for example by recommending meta keywords or buying links.
