The Top Search Engines in 2026, and How to Be Visible in Each

Google handles about nine in ten searches worldwide, but Bing powers more products than its share suggests, and AI answer engines are a new kind of search engine with their own crawlers. Here's the list, with what to do for each.

Key takeaways

  • Worldwide in September 2026, StatCounter puts Google at 89.94%, Bing 5.29%, Yahoo 1.36%, Yandex 1.30%, DuckDuckGo 0.74% and Baidu 0.44%.
  • Bing's index matters beyond bing.com: it powers Microsoft Copilot and Yahoo's results.
  • A metasearch engine combines results from other search engines instead of keeping its own full index.
  • AI answer engines such as ChatGPT search and Perplexity run their own crawlers, which you allow or block separately in robots.txt.
  • Alexa rank is gone: Amazon retired Alexa.com on 1 May 2022.

Google is by far the biggest search engine, with about 90% of searches worldwide, followed by Bing, Yahoo, Yandex, DuckDuckGo and Baidu. Alongside them, AI answer engines such as ChatGPT search and Perplexity have become a new kind of search engine, with their own crawlers and their own rules.

Worldwide numbers hide big regional differences. In China, Baidu leads; in Russia, Yandex does. If you target those markets, see Baidu SEO and Yandex SEO.

What is a metasearch engine?

A metasearch engine sends your query to several other search engines and combines what they return, instead of relying on its own full index of the web. The idea predates Google; today the term is also used for travel sites that search many booking sites at once. For SEO, metasearch engines need no separate work: being well indexed in the engines they draw on is what counts.

AI answer engines

ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Claude and Google's AI Mode answer questions by retrieving web pages and citing them. Each AI company runs its own crawlers, and you allow or block them separately in robots.txt: OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, PerplexityBot for Perplexity, Claude-SearchBot for Claude. They don't run JavaScript, and they're often blocked by firewalls by accident. The full list is in AI crawlers.

Whatever happened to Alexa rank?

Alexa.com, Amazon's web ranking site, published a global traffic rank that many SEOs once tracked. Amazon announced in December 2021 that it would retire the site, and it shut down on 1 May 2022. Search engines never used Alexa rank for ranking, and they don't use the third-party traffic or authority scores that replaced it either.

Search engine visibility, measured

Search engine visibility usually means how often your pages appear for the searches you care about. Measure it with Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools impressions, a rank tracker for chosen keywords, and, for AI engines, regular checks of whether you're cited.
