How Much Does SEO Cost? SEO Pricing, Packages and What You Should Get
SEO is sold three ways: a monthly retainer, a fixed project or an hourly rate. Survey data shows what providers actually charge, and Google's own guidance shows what to avoid in a cheap package.

Key takeaways
- In Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers, the most common monthly retainer was $501 to $1,000, the average hourly rate was $111, and the most common project fee was $2,501 to $5,000.
- Location changes the price a lot: 76% of India-based providers in that survey charged $1,000 or less a month, while 79.1% of US and Canada providers charged at least $1,001.
- Experience costs more: average retainers rose from about $1,541 a month for businesses open two years or less to about $3,648 for those open five to ten years.
- Compare packages on deliverables you can check, not on the label. "Monthly SEO" can mean anything from a report to a full team.
- Guaranteed rankings and bulk backlinks are red flags. Google says no one can guarantee a number one ranking.
SEO usually costs somewhere between a few hundred and a few thousand dollars a month, depending on scope, location and experience. In Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers, the most common monthly retainer was $501 to $1,000, and the average hourly rate was $111.
Those numbers are a guide, not a quote. What matters more is what the price buys, which is where most of the confusion about SEO packages comes from.
The three ways SEO is priced
| Model | Most common range (Ahrefs survey) | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly retainer | $501 to $1,000 a month (20.4% of providers) | Ongoing work: content, technical upkeep, reporting |
| Hourly | $75 to $100 an hour (24%); average $111 | Advice, training, small fixes |
| Per project | $2,501 to $5,000 (21.2%); 60.6% charge $1,001 or more | Audits, migrations, one-off builds |
What changes the price
Where the provider is
Location is the biggest single difference in the survey. 76% of India-based SEOs charged $1,000 or less a month and 85.7% charged $30 or less an hour, while 79.1% of providers in the US and Canada charged at least $1,001 a month. Providers who work worldwide averaged $3,473.74 a month against $1,557.08 for those who serve a local area.
How long they've been in business
Hourly rates follow the same pattern, from an average of $73.05 for the newest providers to $118.35 for those with ten or more years. Project fees rose from about $1,882 to about $9,087.
How much work is included
A local business with 20 pages needs much less than an online shop with 20,000 products. Content is usually the largest cost: writing and updating pages takes far more hours than a technical audit.
What an SEO package should include
Google lists the services an SEO may provide: reviewing content and structure, technical advice on hosting, redirects, error pages and JavaScript, content development, campaign management, keyword research, training, market expertise, and optimizing for generative AI. A clear package names the ones it covers and gives a quantity for each month.
| Package line | Vague | Clear |
|---|---|---|
| Technical | Ongoing technical optimization | Monthly crawl and audit; fixes for the top 10 issues; report of what changed |
| Content | Content strategy | Four new pages and two updated pages a month, briefs approved by you |
| Local | Local SEO | Google Business Profile updates weekly; review replies; citations checked quarterly |
| Links | Link building | Outreach for mentions on named industry sites; no paid links |
| Reporting | Monthly report | Search Console clicks, impressions and indexed pages; goals in analytics; a 30-minute call |
| AI search | AI optimization | AI crawler access checked; key pages readable without JavaScript; snippet controls reviewed |
Cheap and "guaranteed" SEO: what to avoid
- Guaranteed rankings. Google: no one can guarantee a number one ranking on Google.
- Packages sold by the number of backlinks. Buying or exchanging links to manipulate rankings breaks Google's spam policies. See toxic backlinks.
- Unsolicited emails offering page-one results. Google says to be wary of firms that email you out of the blue.
- Secret methods. Google says to be careful if a company won't clearly explain what it intends to do.
- Accounts you don't own. Search Console, analytics and your Business Profile should stay in your name.
Affordable options for small businesses
- Do the basics yourself with Google's free SEO Starter Guide and our SEO for beginners plan.
- Pay for a one-off audit and fix the issues it finds, then decide whether you need ongoing help.
- Hire a freelancer for a defined job, such as fixing technical errors or writing your main service pages.
- Pick a small monthly package with named deliverables rather than an open-ended retainer.

FAQ
How much does SEO cost per month?+
In Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers (updated August 2024), the most common monthly retainer was $501 to $1,000, chosen by 20.4% of respondents. Prices ranged far above that for experienced or international providers.
How much does SEO cost in India?+
In the same survey, 76% of India-based providers charged $1,000 or less per month, and 85.7% charged $30 or less per hour. Prices in rupees vary widely by scope, so compare what each package includes.
Are cheap SEO packages worth it?+
A low price isn't the problem; vague or risky deliverables are. A small package that fixes technical issues and improves a few pages each month can be good value. A cheap package built on hundreds of backlinks can break Google's spam policies.
Is there such a thing as guaranteed SEO?+
No. Google says no one can guarantee a number one ranking, and that if someone guarantees first place you should find someone else. A provider can guarantee work done, such as fixes and pages, not positions.
Should I pay hourly, per project or monthly?+
Pay per project for a defined job such as an audit or a migration. Pay hourly for advice or small fixes. Pay a monthly retainer for ongoing work, such as content and technical upkeep, where you want the same people over time.
