SEO marketing: what it is, where it fits in digital marketing, and how to measure it
SEO marketing is search engine optimization run as a marketing channel: choosing the searches your customers make, building pages that answer them, and measuring the customers those pages bring.

SEO marketing is search engine optimization run as a marketing channel. You decide which searches your customers make, build the page that best answers each one, get those pages found, and measure the enquiries and sales they bring. The optimization half makes pages easy for search engines to crawl and understand; the marketing half decides who each page is for and what it should get them to do.
Within digital marketing, SEO is the channel for unpaid search results. Those positions aren't for sale: Google ranks them programmatically and won't take money for a better one, so every place has to be earned by the page itself. That makes SEO slower to start than ads, and cheaper to keep once it works, because there's no charge per visit.
This guide covers what an SEO marketing programme includes, where it sits next to paid search, social, video, email and content, how the channels compare, how to build a plan and measure it with Google's own tools, and what AI search changes.
What SEO marketing includes
Search engine optimization and marketing are often sold as one service, because neither half pays off alone: a perfectly optimized page nobody needs brings no customers, and a great offer on a page Google can't index brings no visitors. A complete programme has five parts.
- Research: the questions and phrases your customers search, found with keyword research and the queries your site already appears for in Search Console.
- Pages: one page per search intent, each the clearest answer to its search. Google's Search Essentials boils this down to putting the words searchers use where they stand out: the title, the main heading, alt text and link text.
- Foundations: pages that can be crawled, rendered and indexed, on a fast and secure site. That's the job of technical SEO.
- Promotion: telling people the pages exist. Google's Starter Guide suggests promoting new content through social media, communities, ads and word of mouth, the last being one of the most effective and lasting.
- Measurement: visits, enquiries and sales from organic search, tracked separately from your other channels so you can see what SEO is worth.
Where SEO fits in digital marketing
A useful way to place SEO is by what the customer is doing when they meet you. In a social feed, a video or a newsletter, they weren't looking for you: you interrupt or remind them. In search, they've typed the problem themselves, such as "invoice software for freelancers" or "vet open Sunday". SEO marketing is about being the answer at that moment; the other channels decide how many people already know your name when it comes.
The channels also feed each other. A social post, a news story or a newsletter can turn into a link, a mention or someone searching your brand name next month. Paid search shows which searches turn into customers before your pages rank for them. Content marketing produces most of the pages SEO ranks. Treating SEO as a separate silo wastes some of that.
SEO compared with other channels
Google Analytics 4 sorts visits into default channel groups, which makes a practical comparison: each row below is a channel you'll see in your own reports.
| GA4 channel | What it counts | How you pay | What decides whether you're seen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Organic Search | Unpaid search results, including Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode | No cost per visit; you pay in work | Search engines' ranking systems. Google says it doesn't accept payment to rank pages higher |
| Paid Search | Ads on search engines such as Google and Bing | Usually per click | In Google Ads, Ad Rank: your bid, ad and landing page quality, the search context and other factors |
| Organic Social | Unpaid links from social sites | Time to post and reply | Each platform's feed and search |
| Organic Video | Unpaid links from video sites such as YouTube, TikTok or Vimeo | Production time | On YouTube, relevance, engagement and quality, YouTube says |
| Links in your emails | Building a list and a sending tool | Who has subscribed | |
| Referral | Links on other websites | Mostly earned | Other sites choosing to link to you |
Paid and organic search are the two rows that compete for the same results page, so they decide most budgets. SEO vs PPC covers when each one pays back, and if a proposal bundles everything as "SEM", what SEM means next to SEO untangles the terms. SEO and content marketing
Content marketing and SEO are two views of the same pages. Content marketing asks what will help, persuade or keep a customer. SEO asks whether people search for it, and whether search engines can find and understand it. Google's guidance on helpful content describes how the overlap goes wrong: content made mainly to attract visits from search engines, extensive automation to produce content on many topics, and writing to a particular word count. Google says it has no preferred word count.
In practice, plan content from the questions customers search, publish one strong page per question, and improve what you have before adding more. Improving existing pages with Search Console data is often the quickest win; writing new pages that rank and convert is the other half.
Building an SEO marketing plan
A written plan is what turns SEO from a list of tasks into a strategy. Seven steps cover it:
- Start from revenue. List the products or services that matter most and the customers who buy them, so the plan aims at sales, not traffic.
- List the searches those customers make at each stage, from the problem ("why is my website slow") to the purchase ("website speed audit service"). Search Console already shows the ones you appear for.
- Map one page to each intent. Where two pages chase the same search, merge them; where a valuable search has no page, that's the next page to write.
- Clear what stops pages being crawled, indexed or read: robots.txt blocks, noindex tags, wrong canonicals, and content that only appears after JavaScript runs.
- Write or improve each page so it answers the search in its first two sentences and gives a customer what they need to act: prices, proof, the next step.
- Promote the pages through the channels you already have: social, email, partners and PR. Search Essentials puts it simply: tell people about your site.
- Review monthly: put more effort into what brings enquiries, and fix or drop what only brings visits.
For local businesses, add your Google Business Profile to the plan: Google says local results depend mainly on relevance, distance and how well-known a business is, which draws on links to your business and how many reviews you have, and that there's no way to pay for a better local ranking. The local SEO guide goes step by step.
How to measure SEO marketing
Measure SEO as a channel, with the same yardstick as the others: customers, not just visits. Two free Google tools, Search Console and GA4, cover most of it, and your sales records do the rest.
| Question | Where to look | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Are people seeing us in search? | Search Console, Performance report | Impressions: how many times your site appeared in Search results, by query, page, country and device |
| Are they clicking? | Search Console, Performance report | Clicks, CTR (clicks divided by impressions) and the average position of your topmost result |
| How do we do in AI Overviews and AI Mode? | Search Console, Generative AI performance report | How people find your content through Google's generative AI features. That traffic is also counted in the main Performance report, under the Web search type |
| What do search visitors do on the site? | GA4, Organic Search channel | Engagement, enquiries and sales from unpaid search, which GA4 says includes Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode |
| Do AI assistants send us visitors? | GA4, AI Assistant channel | Visits from sources such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Grok. Google's own AI features aren't in this channel |
| Is it worth the money? | Your CRM or sales records | Leads and revenue by channel, set against what each channel costs |
Judge trends by group of queries and by page, not day by day. Google's Starter Guide warns that the effect of a change can show within hours or take months, and suggests giving it a few weeks before you decide whether it worked. For tracking specific phrases over time, see how to track keyword rankings, and set up Search Console and GA4 before you change anything so you have a baseline: SEO analytics with Search Console and GA4 shows how.
SEO marketing and AI search
AI search hasn't replaced SEO marketing; it has added more places where you can be found. Google says its generative AI features are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems, and that from its perspective, optimizing for them is still SEO. The entry ticket for AI Overviews and AI Mode is a page that's indexed and allowed to show a snippet. There's no special schema.org markup to add, and Google Search doesn't use llms.txt files.
What changes is who reads your page. ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity send their own crawlers, and none of them is known to execute JavaScript, so anything your pages render only in the browser may be missing from what they read. And the answer isn't built from your site alone: Google points out that its AI features surface opinions from blogs, video and forum posts about what you sell, and says that seeking inauthentic mentions is less helpful than it might seem.
- Keep the main content of key pages in the HTML your server sends. Can ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity read your website? explains the test.
- Allow the AI search crawlers you want, in robots.txt and at your CDN or firewall. Google lists crawler access at both levels among its best practices.
- Answer each question plainly near the top. Google says there's no requirement to break content into tiny pieces for AI.
- Earn genuine third-party coverage through digital PR, reviews and social media SEO.
- Keep paid and organic apart in your head: Google Ads can now show ads above, below and within AI Overviews and in AI Mode, but those are ad placements, separate from the organic links an AI Overview cites.

Choosing a digital marketing SEO agency or company
Google publishes its own advice on hiring an SEO. It lists what a good one can help with, including a review of your content or structure, technical advice, content development, keyword research, expertise in specific markets and geographies, and optimizing for generative AI. Before you sign, it suggests asking three things: can they show examples of previous work, do they follow Google Search Essentials, and what results do they expect, in what timeframe?
Signs to walk away, most of them from the same Google page:
- Guaranteed rankings. Google's words: "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google."
- A claimed "special relationship" with Google, or a "priority submit".
- Cold emails out of the blue promising page one.
- Secrecy, or no clear explanation of what they'll actually do.
- A requirement that you link to them. Google says you should never have to link to an SEO.
- Monthly reports full of rankings and traffic, with no enquiries or sales in them.
How to choose an SEO agency turns this into a scorecard. To hand over the audit-and-fix work instead, our done-for-you service audits your most important pages, makes the on-page fixes and tracks each week whether AI search names you. Ads and link building aren't part of it.
SEO marketing mistakes that waste budget
- Chasing search volume instead of intent. A big keyword that nobody buys from fills reports, not order books.
- Publishing many thin pages for near-identical searches. Google's spam policies treat generating many pages without adding value for users as scaled content abuse.
- Measuring positions, not customers. Rankings are a means; enquiries and revenue are the result.
- Stopping after launch. Prices, products and competitors change, and a page that isn't updated goes out of date.
- Buying links or reviews. Paid links that pass ranking credit are link spam under Google's policies, and Google Maps prohibits reviews offered in exchange for incentives.
- Ignoring the other channels. A page nobody shares, links to or searches for by name has to win on content alone.

What is SEO in digital marketing?+
It's the channel that earns visits from unpaid search results. Other digital marketing channels, such as paid search, social, video and email, buy or create attention; SEO makes your pages the answer when someone searches. It works best alongside them, because they bring the links, mentions and brand searches that help pages rank.
Is SEO marketing the same as content marketing?+
No, but they overlap heavily. Content marketing creates material that helps or persuades customers. SEO makes sure that material answers real searches and can be found, crawled and understood. Most SEO marketing work happens on content pages.
What does a digital marketing SEO company do?+
Usually keyword research, a technical audit, page and content improvements, earning links and mentions, and monthly reporting. Google's advice on hiring an SEO suggests asking for examples of previous work, whether they follow Google Search Essentials, and what results they expect and when.
How do I measure SEO marketing?+
Use Search Console for impressions, clicks and the queries you appear for; GA4's Organic Search channel for what search visitors do on your site; and your sales records for leads and revenue. GA4 counts visits from Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode as Organic Search, and visits from tools such as ChatGPT in a separate AI Assistant channel.
Is SEO still worth it with AI search?+
Yes. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on pages that are already indexed and snippet-eligible, with nothing extra to add, so SEO best practice is the way in. Other AI assistants also fetch and cite web pages, so pages that are crawlable, readable as plain HTML and clearly written serve both.
How long does SEO marketing take to work?+
Anywhere from hours to months for a single change, according to Google's Starter Guide, which recommends waiting a few weeks before you judge one. Plan in quarters, not weeks, and measure by page and group of queries.
